Changing exhibitions of American crafts, as well as a selection from the permanent collection of 20th-century crafts - glass, ceramics, wood, fiber and metal - are featured at the Renwick Gallery. The gallery, a department of the National Museum of American Art, is housed in a building designed in 1859 by architect James Renwick but not completed until 1874. The Renwick's principal rooms have been restored and refurbished in the style of the late 19th century. Highlights: Albert Paley's "Portal Gates," Grand Salon, Octagon Room, staircase, sales exhibitions of crafts in the museum shop.
